This Paid Chapter Deletion / Unpublishing Policy explains what happens when an author wants to delete, unpublish, restrict, materially change, or remove a chapter that has been offered through Dragon's Quill's paid features.
This policy applies to Early Access chapters, Individual Chapter Unlocks, Next-5 Bundles, Binge Packages, Story Subscriptions, and any other paid reader access features Dragon's Quill may offer.
This policy is part of the Dragon's Quill Terms of Service and applies together with the Author Monetization Terms, Reader Purchase and Subscription Terms, Refund Policy, Payout Policy, and Mature Content and Monetization Eligibility Policy.
1. Core Rule
Authors may not freely hard-delete, unpublish, hide, restrict, or remove paid chapters in a way that harms reader access, payment records, refund rights, subscription expectations, accounting records, or Dragon's Quill policy.
Once readers have paid for access to a chapter, that chapter creates reader-facing and platform-facing obligations.
Dragon's Quill may restrict deletion, require admin review, preserve records, issue refunds, reverse earnings, hold payouts, or take other action if paid content is removed or made unavailable.
2. Content Covered by This Policy
This policy applies to any chapter or story content that:
- was purchased through an Individual Chapter Unlock;
- was included in a Next-5 Bundle;
- was included in a Binge Package;
- was accessed through a Story Subscription;
- generated author earnings;
- was part of a paid Early Access offering;
- was advertised or displayed as paid content;
- is connected to refund, chargeback, payout, tax, support, or access-control records.
This policy may apply even if only one reader purchased or accessed the content.
3. Paid Chapters May Become Free Normally
Authors may allow paid Early Access chapters to become free according to their Free Release Date or Dragon's Quill's normal free-release rules.
A paid chapter becoming free is generally allowed.
When a paid chapter becomes free:
- all eligible readers may read it;
- prior purchasers keep their purchase records;
- prior purchasers are not automatically entitled to refunds;
- author earnings are not automatically reversed;
- the chapter may remain part of the story's normal public table of contents.
Early Access means readers paid to read first, not to keep the chapter permanently exclusive.
4. Drafts and Unpurchased Chapters
Authors generally have more flexibility to delete or unpublish chapters that:
- are still drafts;
- have not been published;
- have not been offered as paid content;
- have not been purchased;
- have not been accessed through a paid subscription;
- have not generated author earnings;
- are not connected to active reader access rights.
Dragon's Quill may still restrict deletion if the content is relevant to moderation, legal, copyright, fraud, support, or technical issues.
5. Unpublishing or Deleting Paid Chapters
If a chapter has been purchased, included in a paid bundle, included in a Binge Package, accessed through a Story Subscription, or used to generate author earnings, the author may not freely hard-delete it.
Dragon's Quill may require one or more of the following before removal:
- author confirmation;
- admin review;
- explanation for removal;
- notice to affected readers;
- refund review;
- payout hold review;
- preservation of the prior version;
- access-control review;
- subscription review;
- moderation review.
- Dragon's Quill may deny, delay, or condition the deletion or unpublishing request.
6. Material Changes to Paid Chapters
Authors may usually make ordinary edits to paid chapters, including typo fixes, formatting improvements, continuity corrections, and quality improvements.
However, authors may not materially change a paid chapter in a way that misleads readers or removes the value of what readers purchased.
Problematic changes may include:
- replacing the chapter with unrelated content;
- deleting most of the chapter body;
- changing the chapter into only an author note;
- removing major story content after purchase;
- changing paid content to avoid moderation;
- hiding prohibited content;
- changing content in a way that makes purchase disclosures inaccurate;
- altering content to avoid refund or chargeback issues.
If Dragon's Quill believes a paid chapter was materially changed in a harmful or misleading way, Dragon's Quill may restore a prior version where technically available, require additional disclosure, restrict editing, issue refunds, reverse earnings, hold payouts, disable monetization, or take moderation action.
7. Refund Review After Removal
If paid content is removed, unpublished, restricted, or made unavailable after purchase, Dragon's Quill may review whether affected readers should receive a full or partial refund.
Refunds may be considered when:
- paid content is removed shortly after purchase;
- a reader paid but never had reasonable access;
- the wrong content was provided;
- a chapter was materially changed after purchase;
- a chapter was removed because of author action;
- a chapter was removed because of policy violations;
Dragon's Quill determines a refund is appropriate for reader trust, support, or legal compliance.
Refunds are not automatic in every removal situation.
Dragon's Quill may consider:
- how long the chapter was available;
- whether the reader accessed the chapter;
- whether the content later became free;
- whether removal was temporary or permanent;
- whether the removal was caused by the author;
- whether removal was required by law, copyright, moderation, payment processor rules, or safety concerns;
- whether the purchase was part of a bundle, Binge Package, or subscription.
- Refund decisions are governed by the Refund Policy.
8. Effect on Author Earnings and Payouts
If paid content is removed, unpublished, restricted, or made unavailable, Dragon's Quill may:
- hold pending earnings;
- delay payouts;
- issue refunds;
- reverse author earnings;
- create a negative ledger balance;
- offset future earnings;
- cancel or pause subscriptions;
- disable monetization for the chapter;
- disable monetization for the story;
- disable monetization for the author account.
If author earnings from affected purchases have already been paid out, Dragon's Quill may offset refunds, chargebacks, or reversals against future earnings or take other action under the Payout Policy.
9. Dragon's Quill Policy Removal Rights
Dragon's Quill may remove, restrict, hide, demonetize, disable, or unpublish content for policy reasons.
Reasons may include:
- violation of the Terms of Service;
- violation of the Author Monetization Terms;
- violation of the Mature Content and Monetization Eligibility Policy;
- copyright complaints;
- plagiarism concerns;
- legal requirements;
- payment processor requirements;
- safety concerns;
- fraud or payment abuse;
- reader protection;
- moderation decisions;
- platform integrity;
- technical or security issues.
Moderation removal, legal removal, payment-processor requirements, or safety restrictions may override paid access.
If Dragon's Quill removes paid content for policy reasons, refunds may be considered under the Refund Policy, but removal is not automatically refundable in every case.
10. Purchase Records Remain
Dragon's Quill may preserve purchase, subscription, access, refund, chargeback, payout, tax, accounting, moderation, and support records even if paid content is removed, unpublished, deleted, restricted, or made free.
These records may be kept for:
- reader purchase history;
- author ledger records;
- tax records;
- accounting records;
- payout records;
- refund review;
- chargeback disputes;
- fraud prevention;
- legal compliance;
- support;
- moderation evidence;
- audit logs;
- access-control history.
- Deleting or unpublishing content does not erase payment records or financial obligations.
11. Story Deletion or Author Account Deletion
If a monetized story has paid purchases, active subscriptions, refund issues, chargeback risk, payout records, or paid access history, Dragon's Quill may restrict story deletion.
Dragon's Quill may require admin review before a monetized story is deleted, unpublished, or made unavailable.
If an author requests account deletion, Dragon's Quill may:
- disable new purchases;
- disable new subscriptions;
- cancel or pause existing subscriptions;
- preserve purchase records;
- preserve payout records;
- preserve tax/accounting records;
- preserve moderation records;
- review refunds;
- settle eligible unpaid earnings according to the Payout Policy;
- hold funds for refunds, chargebacks, disputes, or legal obligations;
- anonymize author identity where appropriate;
- retain legally required records.
Account deletion does not erase prior payout, refund, chargeback, tax, accounting, moderation, or legal obligations.
12. Subscriptions and Inactive Stories
Story Subscriptions depend on ongoing reader value.
If a monetized story becomes inactive, stale, misleading, or lacks meaningful Advance Content, Dragon's Quill may take action.
Dragon's Quill may:
- warn the author;
- show readers a subscription-health warning;
- pause new subscriptions;
- prevent subscription renewals;
- cancel subscriptions at the end of the billing period;
- cancel subscriptions sooner where necessary;
- issue refunds where appropriate;
- disable subscription monetization;
- disable all monetization for the story.
Dragon's Quill may consider factors such as:
- number of current Advance Chapters;
- date of most recent Advance Chapter;
- date of most recent free chapter;
- upcoming scheduled chapters;
- author activity;
- reader complaints;
- refund requests;
- chargebacks;
- subscription cancellation patterns.
Dragon's Quill does not guarantee that a story subscription will remain available forever.
13. Reader Access After Removal
If paid content is removed or restricted, reader access may change.
Depending on the situation, Dragon's Quill may:
- preserve access for prior purchasers;
- restore access if content returns;
- revoke access because of policy, legal, copyright, safety, or payment reasons;
- make the chapter free;
- issue full or partial refunds;
- provide alternate support;
- show a locked, removed, or unavailable state;
- preserve the reader's purchase history.
Dragon's Quill may decide access treatment case by case based on legal, technical, payment, refund, moderation, and platform considerations.
14. Author Cooperation
Authors must cooperate with Dragon's Quill when paid content deletion, unpublishing, restriction, or removal issues arise.
Dragon's Quill may ask authors for:
- the reason for deletion or unpublishing;
- whether removal is temporary or permanent;
- whether content will return;
- whether readers should be notified;
- whether subscriptions should continue;
- whether paid access can be preserved;
- whether refunds may be appropriate;
- whether there are copyright, safety, or legal concerns.
Failure to cooperate may result in payout holds, refund decisions, earnings reversals, monetization restrictions, or other enforcement action.
15. Appeals
Dragon's Quill may allow authors to appeal certain content removal, monetization restriction, or paid-content decisions.
Appeals should explain why the author believes the decision was mistaken and should identify the story, chapter, and account involved.
Dragon's Quill may uphold, modify, or reverse a decision.
Appeals do not guarantee restoration of content, monetization, payouts, subscriptions, or reader access.
Dragon's Quill is not required to offer appeals for all decisions, including decisions required by law, payment processor rules, serious safety concerns, copyright issues, fraud, or legal compliance.
16. Changes to This Policy
Dragon's Quill may update this Paid Chapter Deletion / Unpublishing Policy from time to time.
If Dragon's Quill makes material changes, Dragon's Quill may provide notice by posting the updated policy, changing the "Last Updated" date, emailing authors, showing an in-product notice, requiring acceptance in Author Studio, or using another reasonable method.
Dragon's Quill may require authors to accept updated policies before continuing monetization.
